Why undergo a Cardiac Screening?
• Up to 100 young people die each year in Ireland from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS)
• 1 in 300 people may have a cardiac abnormality
• The national register recently reported that the incidents of SADS are higher in Ireland than many other European countries.
• In Italy cardiac screening is mandatory for anyone aged 12 to 35 years involved in competitive sport for the past 25 years. They have reduced the incidents of SADS by 89%.
• The GAA’s Medical Scientific and Welfare Committee and the International Rugby Board recommend cardiac screening for all players over the age of 14 years
• The European Society of Cardiology & the International Olympic Committee recommends cardiac screening.
• Heartaid’s service is based on the recommendations of the above named organisations.

Aonach Leabhair/ Book Fair
Every day the Book Fair will be open in the morning from 8.30am to 9.00am and in the afternoon from 1.30pm to 3.00pm and will be open on Wednesday 14th, Thursday 15th, Friday 16th and Monday 19th October 2015
Books are always a great idea for presents and why not be super organised and do some Christmas Present Shopping at the Book Fair.
This is an important Fundraiser for the School in terms of receiving Free Books. The more books that the School sells over the course of the four days – the more free books we earn for the school. Usually about 60% of the sales comes back to the school in the form of free books. (This is the agreement between the school and the Book Fair company).
So it’s a win-win! You get to buy and enjoy fabulous books and at the same time you are supporting our School by ensuring that every child in the school gets the opportunity to read more fantastic books during school hours.
Looking forward to seeing your all there.
Go raibh mile maith agat go léir.

Your Child's Education Passport
The Education Passport will be of particular interest to those of you who have children in 6th class as it refers to the information which will be sent to your child’s secondary school. The use of this method of reporting is compulsory for schools from this year and includes an opportunity for you as parents to input into the report. Your school should give you a profile sheet called “My child’s profile” to fill out about your child. This is a great opportunity for you to ensure that your child’s new secondary school fully understands your child as an individual. If you do not receive this sheet you should ask for it at the school. If in the unlikely event that you have difficulty accessing the sheet through the school you can down load it here, and forward it on to your child’s new school yourself.
http://www.ncca.ie/en/Curriculum_and_Assessment/Early_Childhood_and_Primary_Education/Primary-Education/Assessment/Report_Card_Templates/Transfer/Final_Parent_Profile_English.pdf
You should also receive a copy of your child’s profile called (My Profile) before both are sent to the secondary school.
For a copy of the Circular please follow: http://www.education.ie/en/Circulars-and-Forms/Active-Circulars/cl0027_2015.pdf

First Holy Communion Saturday 23rd May 2015
First class parents are organising the communion party at the school after the Mass. Parents of 2nd class have been enquiring as to how many guests they can bring to the school so as to have some idea how many people to expect they are aiming to cater for approximately 6 adults per communion child.
The galleries will be open in the church for the Holy Communion.

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS WHO HAD CHILDREN AT THE DRAMATRICKS/KONFIDENT KIDS CLASSES ON WEDNESDAY 6TH MAY 2015 2.45PM AND 3.45PM:
I think other kids might have brought home other people’s uniforms by mistake – my own girl Beibhinn (Senior Inf) brought home somebody else’s Tracksuit and T-shirt!! And so her’s must be in somebodys else’s bag!!
If your children are involved in the Dramatricks/Konfident Kids Group – can you please check their Sports Uniforms to see if they have the right one or maybe they might have two of something by mistake.
We can sort out swapping the uniforms back at the school – Hilda does not mind if we use the school office to hand in/store the uniforms so we can all go through the bundle and get back our own ones.
Thanks a mill,
Emma (AKA Beibhinn’s Mam – Senior Infs)

Nepal Earthquake Appeal - Clonakilty Founded Charity 'JUST ONE' Appeal
With the tragic news of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Nepal only a few short days ago, perhaps it may be possible to circulate news from the just-one Charity to the school community?
just-one’s founder Declan Murphy (from Clonakilty), gave an illustrated talk to all the school during an assembly in the autumn of 2012. While Declan was studying to become primary school teacher, he went on a trip to Nepal. As a result he vowed to return and help the children there once he’d graduated and so he has done, by founding the now 10 year old just-one Charity.
The charity works with children who’ve been forced to live and beg on the streets on Kathmandu. The charity’s work seeks not only to facilitate access to education for street children but it also offers counselling and rehabilitation services to the children and offers family support and empowerment to their family network.
Having been in contact with Declan’s family it is suggested that people go to the just-one website and Facebook pages for accounts and pictures of what’s happening concerning the children the charity has been helping. All the Just-One children and support workers are safe and accounted for, though one staff member’s mother and three sisters were killed by the quake.

Your donations to global organisations will go to provide emergency relief work right across the Himalayas and your urgently needed donations to just-one will go straight to keeping the more than 70 children and 30 families that it supports safe and well along with allowing continued support to their families through the current uncertainty and to help them and their families to start getting their lives back on track again. These were families who were already struggling against the chronic poverty which saw their respective children come to just-one’s attention in the first place.
Whether it’s a once off donation or a preferred monthly contribution in support of just-one’s work, you’ll find all the required details here and can rest assured too that it’ll be put to the very best use in support of the incredibly brave and resilient gang of kids we’re so privileged to work with in Nepal. http://www.just-one.org/your-
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Yours sincerely,
Jane Connaughton,
(a childhood neighbour and friend Declan Murphy and his family).
