KYSS Mental Health Awareness Talk

Edel Foley, Clinical Manager at our Assessment Day Treatment Centre in Trabeg Lawn, Douglas (MTAS)  is the guest speaker at the Mental Health Awareness Talk hosted by Kinsale Youth Support Services (KYSS) on Tuesday 22nd November 2016 at 8pm at Actons Hotel, Kinsale, Cork.
The upcoming presentation on Adolescent Development & Substance Misuse Issues in the 21st Century will be invaluable to anyone who wants to know a little more about how best to understand adolescents. Young people do not live in isolation . They live in and transact with a complex world, where their daily lives are embedded in a multitude of systems that impact on their health, well being and even their choices. The problems and challenges they experience have to be understood in relation to the context in which they arise to ensure that the interventions and support offered are relevant and effective. The adolescent stage of development is a time where many life long patterns of behaviour are established . Therefore the first step to help young people is to be able to understand the various stages of development they go through and how the teenage years are a window of vulnerability to substance use.
Further information on our free service at Matt Talbot Adolescent Services isavailable on our website at www.mtas.ie

A survey on school uniform costs and other associated costs

The Department of Education and Skills is developing a directive to schools regarding school uniform policy and other associated costs.

The Minister is proposing that this directive will put greater emphasis on reducing the cost of school uniforms and other associated items.

As part of a consultation process the Department has given National Parents Council Primary the opportunity to give its observations, comments and suggestions on this issue.

In order to provide observations we are surveying parents to get your views on school uniforms and other associated costs.

Click this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SchoolUniformCosts to take part in this short survey.

The survey will close on the evening of Wednesday the 23rd of November 2016. Please circulate to any parents you think might be interested in completing this survey.

Max's Fundraising Events - Thursday 1st and 8th December 2016

Dear Parents,

Following the last successful charity dinners at Max’s we have decided to repeat this event again on Thursday 1st December or Thursday 8th December 2016 but we cannot do this without your help as we need the parents to cook, prepare, wash- up, set up and serve the meals!!

This also helps us to practically eliminate all overheads and we are just left with very basic costs. Last year’s event raised €4,000 for the school but only with everyone’s support.

This is a fun but professional event with very high quality food and excellent value for money, this year it will be a 7 course tasting menu for €27.00.

Possibly new taste and flavours for some but hopefully it will appeal to you all.

This is also a great way for you to meet other parents because ye will all be in the same boat which will be well out of your comfort zone.

We will need volunteers for both dates:

Food preparation
9am - 12 noon approximately
3 people

Wash up
6.30 - 9pm & 9pm - midnight
1 person for 1st shift and 2 for later shift

Kitchen
6pm - Midnight
3 people per night

Wait staff
6pm - Midnight
4 people per night

Morning After
9am – 11am
2 - 3 people

To volunteer please contact us on 021-477-2443 or 086-196-7587

See maxs.ie to see the menu.

Please spread the word to friends, neighbors and colleagues!

Kinsale Junior Ladies are Munster Champions!

After becoming County Junior Champions only a few weeks ago, Kinsale Ladies made their way through the Munster Championship defeating Austin Stacks and Dungarvan along the way. But in front of a huge crowd in Mallow yesterday they became Munster Champions in a very tough encounter against an excellent team from Drom–Broadford.

Drom-Broadford were first off the mark with an excellent point. It took Kinsale almost 6 minutes to get their first point which Orla Finn kicked superbly. Orla went onto kick 2 more before Drom-Broadford were to get on the score board again.  Captain fantastic Aisling Judge made crucial a penalty save on the 13th minute which would have put Drom-Broadford in front.  Orla, Faye Aherne and Sadhbh O Leary went on to kick points in the first half and Kinsale led 10 points to 3 at half time.

Drom-Broadford opened the second half very brightly and kicked 1-04 without reply to bring the score back to level pegging; 0-10 to 1-7. Sadhbh O Leary steadied the team and kicked a great point to put Kinsale back in front, followed by another point from Orla. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams kicking over points and with 10 minutes to go there was only 1 point between the teams with Kinsale just in the lead with the narrowest of margins. Kinsale managed to stay in the lead from this point with Loraine Copithorne playing a stormer in mid field and the backs Georgina Buckley, Christine Keohane, Caoimhe O Callaghan, Emma O Brien, Georgia Gould and Tracy McCarthy holding their positions and preventing the opposition from getting back on the score board. Orla Finn kicked the last 3 points and was deserved recipient of Player of the Match scoring an amazing 12 points out of a total of 17. The game finished Kinsale 0-17, Drom-Broadford 1-10.

Next up for Kinsale are the Connacht Champions in 4 weeks time.

Aisling Judge made an excellent speech and thanked the huge crowd for coming along to support them and thanked all the local businesses who have gotten behind them and decorated their businesses! Check out Kinsale GAA’s  Facebook page to see all the photos.

Scorers; Orla Finn 0-12, Sadhbh O Leary 0-3 and Faye Aherne 0-2.

Panel; Aisling Judge, Aisling Lee, Emma O Brien, Christine Keohane, Tracy McCarthy, Caoimhe O Callaghan, Georgina Buckley, Ellen Murphy, Loraine Copithorne, Aoife Keating, Jenny Murphy, Juliette Cronin, Sadhbh O Leary, Orla Finn, Faye Aherne, Georgia Gould, Rebecca Murphy, Christina Broderick, Clare Tyner, Neasa O Leary, Rebecca Murphy, Danielle Murphy, Lisa Copithorne, Grace Cronin, Sinéad Keating, Meadhbh O Leary, Saoirse Crowley, Kelly Marie Crowley, Hester Mc Carthy, Tracy Mc Carthy, Niamh Steenson, Cara O Dwyer, Niamh Cronin, Dara Tyner.

Reminder : Bake Sale Friday 23rd September 2016

We will kick off this years monthly cake sale with Rang 5 tomorrow Friday 23rd September 2016. For any new parents to the school, each class takes a turn of hosting a cake sale from their class room over the school year to help with the school fundraising in a fun way. The class on duty this month is rang 5 who will bake and sell the cakes. So we ask that all parents send in at least €1 for each child to purchase a bun or cake on this Friday (23rd September 2016) from Rang 5.

Bandon Road and Dangerous Parking

If you are concerned about the dangerous parking on the Bandon road opposite the Kinsale Community College you can raise it via email to your local County Councillors before tomorrow Friday 23rd Sep 2016 when they are meeting to discuss the issue.  Many parents at the Gaelscoil are asking for double yellow lines to placed on this road section so everyone can safely cross the road here.  There is no need for any cars to be parked here as the college has access to the GAA car park for their students and since there are no double yellow lines it is technically not illegal to park on this very dangerous section.

If you want your voice heard please email the following local County Councillors requesting that they help approve double yellow lines on this section of road.

2016/2017 WebTeam

It is another school year and we are looking for a new WebTeam to help manage online content for 2016/2017.  Requirements are pretty simple — you just need a computer, access to the internet and maybe 30–60 minutes of free time to help each week.

The Gaelscoil web framework is based on ‘Google Apps for Education’, which is a free platform for schools. Because of this and all the free time volunteered by parents, we have managed to maintain the school’s online presence at no cost since 2010.  However, there is a lot more we would like to do and we suspect there are many creative parents out there who may be able to lend a hand! Siobhán Ní Núnáin is the school representative on the team and she is very keen to help drive some of these new projects forward.

If you are interested in volunteering for the 2016/2017 school year, please email me at WebTeam@gaelscoilchionntsaile.ie

Thank you

Darren Burke

Designer Minds – Science, Design & Technology Summer Camp in Kinsale 2016

Designer Minds – Science, Design & Technology Summer Camp in Kinsale

5 days of fun and games with Science, Design and Technology in Saile Community and Sports Centre! Each day we explore a new topic and kids get hands on with projects, challenges and experiments which are designed to educate, entertain and inspire. This week long camp is a great opportunity for children, aged 7 to 13, to be introduced to STEAM.

S is for Science. Children will participate in challenges, activities and design projects which will allow them to explore Biology, Physics and Chemistry in a fun and interactive manner.

T is for Technology. Children will produce a stop motion animation movie, always a favourite at Designer Minds camps. They will also explore augmented reality and be introduced to the basics of coding.

E is for Engineering. Kids will learn about the various types of engineers and complete engineering challenges using Lego and Minecraft.

A is for art. Children will work on creative projects which will also be influenced by science, engineering and technology concepts.

M is for Maths. Kids will complete maths challenges using Minecraft, and play games which will help them understand what computer programming is and how it works.

When weather permits children will spend a little time each day outdoors.

Camp runs from 10am to 2pm, August 2nd – 5th and costs €96.  Find out more and book online at www.designerminds.ie/camps

I have also attached our flyer in digital form.

Bingo Fundraiser Cancelled

We have decided not to go ahead with the Bingo Fundraiser. We think it maybe better to hold this event in Sept / October when there are not too many conflicting events on.

Your refund will be sent home with your children this Friday in the original envelopes.

Cork County Libraries Summer Stars Reading Programme 2016

You may have heard already about Cork County Libraries Summer Stars reading programme but if not it is a great opportunity to encourage children to read throughout the summer. They can read whatever they want - there is no set reading list - and at the conclusion of the programme they'll get a stamp card, a colourful certificate with their name on it and an invitation to a ceremony of sorts in the county library building in Cork city. I'm the librarian here in the local library in Kinsale and I'll be fully participating in the programme. I've included a bit of info about it as an attachment. If you want any further information you can reach me on 0214774266,
Best Wishes,
Tom Ryan

They will be selling fresh scones, tea and coffee and parents can also go and check out Senior Infants cake sale.
