Gaelscoil Cake Sale this Friday 21st November 2014

This Friday 21st November 2014 is the turn of Rang 5 to host the monthly Gaelscoil cake sale. As you know the money raised in these monthly cake sales will go towards providing safe access for our children to and from the school.

We would ask that each child would bring in at least €1 to buy a bun/cake at the cake sale this Friday.

We are mindful that some children have allergies and food intolerances so there will be a selection of gluten/wheat/dairy free cakes and there will be a strict nut free policy.

Thanks in advance

Parents Association Update 13th Nov 2014

Event Update

Cake Sale – Carol Nyhan - N Mhora Class Rep
First cake sale took place on the 24th Oct 2014 and raised €446 for the school. Congratulations to Carol Nyhan, Rang 6 pupils, Rang 6 parents and M Eavan for hosting this very successful cake sale. Their time and effort is much appreciated. Next cake sale 21st Nov 2014 with Rang 5 hosting.

Carol is organising 8 cake sales in the school this year, approx. one a month (no cake sale during lent). Carol will co-ordinate the class and parents of the class to bake and the class teacher to manage the sale on the day. There is a strict nut free policy. Gluten and dairy free option is also available.   Each child in the school is encouraged to bring in €1 to buy a cake on the day.

Book Fair - Una McIntosh – Rang 5 & 6
Thanks to Una McIntosh and her team of parents for running an excellent Book Fair once again this year. €1,653 worth of books were sold which gives our school €1,000 worth of new books. The school library will receive approx 100 new books from the Book Fair.

This event is extremely important to the school as it supplies our school with high quality books free of charge. Also, important that we run the Book Fair early in the year so that the students get the maximum out of the new books. If you didn’t make it to the Book Fair or would like to place an order books for Christmas (or anytime) please log onto www.scholastic.ie.  When checking out you will be asked under Schools to choose one of the schools below by selecting Gaelscoil Chionn tSaile the school will benefit from more free books!

Chuckies - Siobhan Devlin – N Beaga Class Rep
Chuckies last Friday night (7th Nov 2014) was a big success! Thanks to Siobhan Devlin and her team from N Beaga for running this event so successfully. They raised €734 for the school.  This is the first time we have run this event and it was a great social occasion for both the children and their parents. Existing parents enjoyed mixing and meeting all the new parents to the school.

Max’s Restraunt evening- Annemarie & Olivier
This popular gourmet event runs on Thursday the 13th and 20th November 2014.   Thanks to Annemarie and Olivier of Max’s for organising every last detail and for opening up their restaurant to this event.

Thanks to all the parents who have volunteered to prep food, wait tables and do wash up. If you have booked a table, please make sure you are not included in anybody else’s table.  Diners are invited to arrive promptly at the specified time and please note that only cash will be accepted on the night. Its very good value at €27 per person of which approx. €22 goes directly to the school.

Calendar -Ciara Duffy – Rang 6 Class Rep

Thanks to Ciara Duffy and all her helpers the new school calendar will make a very prompt appearance this year! Calendars will be available at the office from 1st December 2014. €10 each.  The calendar development is extremely time consuming but the most lucrative fundraiser last year.

Christmas Hamper -Sinead Nolan - Rang Class 5 Rep
Super Valu have very kindly given us a large Christmas Hamper to raffle.  We will be selling tickets in Super Valu 5th & 6th December 2014.  We are looking for additional items to supplement the raffle so if you can donate any luxury items such as alcohol, chocolates, corporate gifts etc. please drop into Hilda at the office. Last year we also received some very generous vouchers from parents of the school.

As Rang 5 is a small class they will need the help of other parents to sell tickets if you have a spare hour that weekend please sign the roster in Hilda s office or contact Sinead Nolan.

Other Business

School Painting
The school needs its 16 bathrooms and the hallway skirting painted and we do not wish to spend our valuable fundraised money on this. Therefore, we are looking for a parent to champion this project. We have 5 painting volunteers already and we just need a coordinator to get it going.

School Yard
Two storage units have been ordered and two benches with storage included have been purchased to house the yard toys.

We are looking for a parent volunteer to paint a chess board in the yard. We have large chess pieces and the teachers are very happy to teach our children chess once it is complete.
More balance boards are being ordered. We will also fix the willow dome.

Shared Reading
Parents of the school have been participating in shared reading with Rang 1 and Rang 2 every Tuesday at 9.05 – 9.40. We would like to include Rang 1 as well now but we need more volunteers. Anyone helping must be Garda vetted – forms from Hilda or Dervilla

If you can assist with any of the above please contact Dervilla Wrynn 087 227 3645

Next meeting Parents Association Meeting Dec 2nd 2014, The Powder Room, The White Lady @8pm

Again, many thanks for everyone’s hard work and support with all the ongoing fundraising activities.

NPC - Child Friendly Administration

Dear Parent,

The Ombudsman for Children’s office has written to the NPC to invite parents and children/young people to participate in a project that is looking at child-friendly administration, which it has commissioned the University College Cork to undertake.

In explaining the study and the request, the OCO office has written:

As you know, the Ombudsman for Children’s Office has been in existence for more than ten years. In that time, the Office has dealt with over ten thousand complaints regarding the actions of public bodies and service providers. The Offices’complaints-handling and investigatory work has given it an insight into the barriers that children and their families can face when attempting to access those services or when they are engaging with decision-makers in public bodies.

However, the Ombudsman for Children’s Office believes that, following a decade of work in this area, it is appropriate to examine in greater depth the experience children and families have of accessing public services, the difficulties they encounter and what practices characterise a rights based, child-friendly approach to public administration.

To that end, the Ombudsman for Children’s Office has commissioned Professor Ursula Kilkelly and her research team at University College Cork’s School of Law to undertake research on child-friendly public administration relevant to education, health and social services. An important part of this study is to hear directly from children and parent/carers about their experiences of public services and bodies in the areas of health, education, housing and material wellbeing and alternative care. Using focus groups, participants will be asked first, to describe their experiences of accessing public service for, with or on behalf of their children and second, to identify any barriers or positive experiences they have had in this area. The main objective is to develop ideas for making such services more accessible, rights respecting and child-friendly.

The project will involve holding six focus groups-four for adults and two for children-which will be held on the 14thand 15th November in Dublin. Our intention is for each focus group to have a maximum of six participants; they will last between 60-90 minutes in the case of adults and between 30-60mins for the children and young people. The participants will all be individuals who have direct experience of engagement with public bodies in the areas under examination.”

If you feel you have something to contribute to the study and would like to participate in one of the focus groups to share your experiences of engagement with your child’s school, the Department of Education or other public bodies please contact Naomi Kennan at:

Corporate Fundraising 2015

Essential Fundraising following on from Michelle’s Newsletter of the 15th October 2015 and the update of what needed for the Gaelscoil Chionn tSaile in 2015. We are asking each parent to come to us with contacts, idea, and help for Corporate Fundraising. We need to work together on this - now.

Each year through Corporate Fundraising, thousands of Schools access Companies who take an interest in real local issues and regional needs. They have funds available to worthy projects. We have a very real one! We need to get planning for our School and we have been told what we need to do it! Now we must put this into action!  We need to ASK for all the help we can get. Lots of Companies have resources for charities, schools etc… across Ireland and thousands of euros to help fund their projects, campaigns and running costs.

We “The PA” of Gaelscoil Chionn tSaile are going to be asking local Business and Large Multinationals in the Cork area to look to our project. We have a target of fundraising €20,000 this year to help us get our set down area and other planning requirements.

We need you & how do you get started?

Post Primary School Transport Provision 2015/2016

Bus Éireann is contacting all primary and post primary schools to remind parents of children currently in 6th class of the eligibility criteria for Post Primary School Transport.

From the commencement of the 2012/2013 school year changes to post primary school transport provision came into effect. In October 2012, a letter referring to these changes and a Question & Answer Sheet issued to all primary and post primary schools in order that parents of children then in 6th class would be aware of the implication of these changes when selecting a post primary school for their children.

Bus Éireann is again contacting all primary and post primary schools to remind parents of children currently in 6th class of the eligibility criteria for Post Primary School Transport.

2014 Gourmet 'Fun'raising' event at Max's

Dear parents,

Following 2012’s  successful charity  dinner in max’s we have decided to repeat this event again on Thursday 13th November and Thursday 20th November 2014 but we cannot do this without your help as we need the parents to cook, prepare, wash- up, set up and serve the meals!!

This helps us to practically eliminate all overheads and we are just left with basic food costs and even those tend to be minimal as some local suppliers kindly donate some produce free of charge or at cost.

This is a fun but professional event with very high quality food and excellent value for money, this year it will be a 7 course gourmet menu for €27.00 of which approx €22.00 goes directly to school.  Possibly new taste & flavours for some but hopefully it will appeal to everyone.

This event is open to all so please tell friends neighbors etc as this helps to get funding from an outside source. 021 4772443 for reservations.

We need volunteers for both dates: Thursday 13th November and Thursday 20th November 2014

Food preparation  9am - 12 noon approx              (3 people)
Wash up:              6.30 - 9pm & 9pm - midnight  (2/3 person per shift)
Kitchen:               6pm - midnight                         (3people per night)
Wait staff:            6pm - midnight                         (4 people per night)

To volunteer please contact us on 0861967587 / text if possible when available and your class please, we welcome the parents of the new classes especially.

School Blazers For Communion Boys

Hello Parents

There has been a suggestion to help to simplify the purchase and organisation of school Blazers for First Communion boys.  Currently blazers have to be purchased in Marks and Spencer and branded with school crests. The parents Association would like to organise a pool of Blazers that could be re-used from year to year saving parents time and the cost of purchase.

As a first step, if anyone has an unwanted blazer and wishes to donate it to the school to be used by future Communion children, please drop it into Hilda.

Depending on the success of this, we may organise a uniform swap event later in the year.

Your feedback on this initiative is welcome!

Kind Regards
Parents Association

Féilire / Calendar

Apologies to everyone trying to access the main school calendar on our websites.   We have an ongoing support ticket open with Google Apps to see why it is not available and whether or not they can recover it for us.  If they cannot resolve the issue we will have to create and populate a new one.

Thank you

Birthday Party Gift Suggestion €5

A suggestion/idea in regard to adopting a €5 in a card option for presents will be discussed at the next PA Meeting, which is being held on Tuesday 16th September2014at 8pm, in the Powder Room, White Lady Hotel.
For the attention of all Classes:
Now that the new school year is well underway, and having spoken to a wide circle of parents from the different Rangs in the school, Carol O Callaghan (AKA Mam of Alice, Ted, Maisie, Miah) and myself (AKA Mam of CriosCian and Beibhinn) would like to make the following suggestion:
Going forward, with regard to birthday parties, we would like to suggest adopting the “€5 in a card” (per child) as another option for a birthday present for the children.
Locally Dunderrow and Belgooly schools do this and it seems to work very well.  We have since learned, from being in contact with other parents in our school, that schools all over the country have chosen to do this too, very successfully.
We would like to stress at this point, that this is NOT school policynor is it something that everybody has to conform to – it isn’t a directive from the teachers in the school – they have no involvement in this at all - but rather a parent driven initiative.  In the current economic climate we thought it might be a way of giving parents one less worry/hassle to deal with – albeit a very small one - some parents have several siblings attending the school!
The decision to consider this “€5 in a card”, we think, is firstly a very personal one and up to each parent to decide whether they would like to do it or not, but it is also a class decision and parents in each class will have to decide whether this option is right for their class or not.  Or indeed it might be the decision to go ahead with a “half and half” option whereby the people in a class who want to give/receive €5 do so and the people who like to give/receive presents do so – the birthday boy or girl then gets a variety of presents/money on his/her special day.  It has also been suggested that €5 euro, whether it be money in a card or a present, is enough to spend on school party presents – again this is just about sharing what some parents have been talking about amongst themselves – it is, of course, naturally up to everybody individually to decide how much they would like to spend on their presents (this is just all about passing on/sharing the information!).

Thanks a mill for taking the time to read this,

Hurling/Camogie training: help needed

From Sept / Oct 2014, the parents are organising hurling/camogie training for Rang 1 - 6. We need help especially for the younger classes (Rang 1- 3), as these classes have bigger numbers and the more help we have, the more the children will learn and develop. Hurling experience not necessary, as it will mainly focus on a few basic skills along with running/jumping/throwing/catching etc. A coach-the-coaches session can be organised if necessary. If interested/curious please contact Eithne Fitzpatrick(087 7551621).

MÍLE BUÍOCHAS!!

We would like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who helped to make the First Holy Communion After Party at the school last Saturday such a lovely occasion. There was a wonderful team of people involved in this event and it was a testimony to the absolutely fantastic community of people who are involved in Gaelscoil Chionn tSáile.

It is important that we extend a special thanks to the mums, dads, children, family and friends who made such delicious food for everyone. There was not a scrap of food left!

To all of our set up people, our flower arrangers, ball puffers, decorators, tea and coffee pourers, servers and cleaner uppers - we could not have done it without you!

To the teachers and children who were so helpful in preparing the school for the party, we really appreciated your help.

Thanks to Mary Walsh from Sandycove who made such a beautiful and delicious Communion Cake for us.

Thanks also to the Kinsale G.A.A and to Eleanor Wrickson and all at the Trident Hotel for loaning us some essential catering equipment.

We left all of the containers, trays, etc under the table on the left hand side as you walk in the old entrance to the Gaelscoil and thank you again to anyone who prepared food for us.

We had great fun hosting this lovely day and we hope everyone did too!

To all Holy Communion Parents

Giles and Catherine Norman have recently developed an app for iphone users that may come in handy for photos taken using iphone on Holy Communion Day.  Unfortunately its not available for android yet.  Details below:

Framed & Delivered is a new Irish app that makes sending photos from the phone special as it prints, frames, gift wraps and sends 6”x8” photos anywhere in the world for €19.95.

Developed in Kinsale, the app offers a simple, affordable, 6 step process to share those special photos that invariably remain on the iphone, going nowhere.

All you have to do is:

-          Download the Framed & delivered app from the app store
-          Take a photo or select one from camera roll; crop if required
-          Choose from ivory white, dark brown and charcoal black frame
-          Caption photo if required
-          Login, select delivery address, add gift card/message
-          Confirm and securely pay in euro, sterling or dollars

This straightforward process may be completed in minutes, as Framed & Delivered takes all the hassle out sending a special photo all over the world. Photographs are safely packaged and arrive beautifully gift wrapped – offering a personal gift at an affordable price.

The Framed & Delivered app is currently available on the app store for iphones. An android version will be available in the near future.

Catherine Norman

First Communion Party - 24th May 2014

Hello everyone

The Gaelscoil First Holy Communion will take place on Saturday 24th Mary 2014. Traditionally the parents of children in Rang 1 co-ordinate and organise the party which takes place back at the school immediately following the First Communion.

This year we need help with the following:

- baking cupcakes, tray bakes, tea bracks, etc (in general cakes which can be easily portioned, served and eaten and which have no impact on the lovely communion outfits!)
- making sandwiches
- setting up the school on Friday 23rd May 2014 from about 3pm
- preparing for the party on the morning of 24th May 2014 from about 9.30am
- helping to serve tea, coffee, and food. Supervising the children's room and helping out during the communion party - from about 12pm on 24th May 2014
- helping with clean up including washing up, cleaning and tidying and ensuring all is ready for school on Monday from about 2pm on 24th May 2014

We would be delighted with help in all or any of the above areas and from anyone who is available (this appeal is by no means exclusive to Rang 1 parents!). A form is available outside of Hilda's office and we would ask anyone who can help to please fill out your name and number on this sheet and indicate what it is you can help with.

Míle Buíochas
Trish agus Caroline

Willow Dome - stones!

The Willow Dome is almost finished, well done to all the team who helped with this living project. However we need to put an outer ring of stones around the perimeter of the Dome. So we are asking all children if they are out at the beach over the weekend to collect 2 or 3 large stones. They can either decorate them at home with permanent markers or they can leave them au natural, and they can decorate them in school.

Stones can be laid on the perimeter next week. Also we are looking for donations of wood trunks that could be  varnished and used for seating? There will be another chance for children to try their hands at either weaving a porthole or a fish next week at school if they wish.
